THE HERMIT OF OAR ISLAND

When Theodore McLain sold Oar Island to Dr. Wesson’s family in 1962, he had tales to tell! The former owner, Van Buren Hagerman, had been a misanthrope, a hermit, who hated or avoided almost everybody, but especially his own family.  His wife divorced him, he lived alone on Oar Island, and he died alone in 1947. Theodore had inherited both the island and some fascinating photographs from Hagerman going back to the 1880s, suggesting that he wasn’t always such a bad guy. It seemed that he had once had a family and took up a happy residence in Muscongus Bay in 1907.  So how did he end up a reclusive Scrooge?

Larry Wesson, Dr. Wesson’s son, has done extensive research and will present his findings in this program that covers Van Buren Hagerman, Oar Island, Waldoboro, the family in New York, with brief excursions to the Spanish American War, Colorado, Nikola Tesla, and J.P. Morgan!

LYDIA KEENE’S 1899 VOYAGE AROUND THE WORLD

Local author Joan Gregoire will give a presentation on her recently published book, The Lydessy: Lydia Keene’s 1899 Voyage Around the World in her own words, chronicling her grandmother’s historic voyage on a merchant schooner in 1899. Stormy seas and high winds, becalmed in extreme heat, being one of only three women on a ship full of robust sailors, tales of this adventure give a wonderful insight into life aboard ship at the end of the 19th century.
